Make Improved Dental Hygiene Your Resolution for 2023

2023 new years resolutions on writing pad

Here are five tips from our hygienist team that you might want to add to your list if improving your dental hygiene is high on your resolution agenda for 2023.

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes. The advice from our hygienists is to brush your teeth twice a day. Time your brushing for two minutes last thing before bed and one other time during the day.
  • Replace your toothbrush every two to three months. If you’re brushing your teeth thoroughly, then your toothbrush bristles will start to show signs of wear around this time. Replace your toothbrush – or the head of your electric toothbrush – every couple of months.
  • Drink tap water. In Norwich, there are about 0.215 milligrams of naturally-occurring fluoride in every litre of tap water. In some areas of the country, the amount of fluoride is topped up to 1mg/litre – as this level of fluoride in the water has been correlated with less tooth decay. However, even at lower levels of fluoride, taking a sip of water will be beneficial to the health of your teeth and gums – especially after a sugary drink or snack.
  • Quit smoking. The benefits to your overall wellbeing of sticking to this hardest of resolutions are huge. The benefits to your oral health alone are significant. Smokers are three to four times more likely to suffer from periodontal disease than non-smokers.
  • Make an appointment with a dental hygienist. There’s nothing like that deep clean feeling of freshness after a visit to the hygienist.

At Norfolk Dental Specialists, we want our patients to love their teeth all year round. If you need any advice on how to maintain a healthy smile, our team of dental hygienists will be happy to help.
